Duking it out online with atheists Empty Duking it out online with atheists

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed how angry and hostile most atheists can be? I have a friend who has become an avid atheist and whenever she brings up religious topics online, I post comments trying to show another perspective and 100% of the time, I wind up getting attacked and insulted by self-proclaimed atheists who don't even know me. Their usual modi operandi include accusing me of being stupid right from the start, telling me I don't know anything about science, saying I'm being illogical, and dodging every instance where I answer their questions by changing the subject with more unrelated questions. You can just hear them oozing with condescension, bitterness and arrogance in just about every comment they make, regardless of how nicely you try to speak to them.

I don't particularly care if people attack me because of my beliefs. As a Christian, I've pretty much become resolved that such a thing is going to happen and it's probably just going to get worse as time goes by. And I don't particularly concern myself with what strangers think of me. I just find it ironic that they accuse religion of causing all the problems in the world, while at the same time excusing their own prejudice and bigotry against people who see things differently than they do. It's interesting how most of them think that simply not agreeing with them is all the justification they need to treat someone with disrespect and hostility. They don't make the connection that their hatred of religious people is no different than any other inter-religious hatreds.

I don't even both with them anymore. They don't have anything good to say and only attach. They don't really read your posts and think about it. they just read it and lash out.

Been there and done that Ray-El. Want to really tick them off? Just start pointing out how much faith you need to believe in science. The difference between theory and fact (evolution is a theory). My favorite is asking them to explain how something came from nothing (big bang what?). If you'd like a good book to read on the subject the title is "The Christian Combat Manual" by Dan Story. All things aside people start hurling insults when they have nothing intelligent to say.

That is one of my favorites, too. I have yet to hear any reasoned explanation as to how the matter/energy that became the big bang came into existence in the first place. Likewise, I have yet to hear how the mechanics of evolution (how life arose, how genes arose, how genetic variations existed in the first place for natural selection to work upon) came to be in the first place.

I don't need to go as far as to say that there never was a big bang, or that evolution does not take place. Rather, it is enough to recognize that theories such as that do not answer the real question -- how did the underlying conditions/circumstances come about so that those events/processes could exist in the first place. Only if you ask the right question, do you get the right answer.

It's almost as fascinating as it is aggravating to talk to them. They seem to have a universal acceptance that anything that comes out of the mouth of a scientist is true, which I find incredible, given the number of times science has been wrong about things in history. They always say it's accurate and trustworthy because of "testing" and "peer review," but false beliefs about global warming and the death of the dinosaurs survived peer review and were accepted as fact. But we now realize they were blatantly wrong. The globe isn't warming. The data they used was intentionally fabricated. The dinosaurs weren't killed by an asteroid. Most of them were already dead when it hit. And when it comes to evolution, the proof is not there. They rely on faith that we might find that proof. But there is absolutely no connection between ANY modern living organism and ANY less evolved biological organism, even after 150 years of searching.

So given the track record of science and the number of questions they still can't answer, I can only conclude that when someone speaks with absolute certainty about there being no God and claiming we all originated from a primordial ooze, then that certainty MUST be based on:

1. a hatred and distrust of religion based on the many mistakes of spiritual leaders in history
2. a resentment toward the concept of God because they don't understand why people suffer
3. a haughty sense that being intelligent requires abandoning "old-fashioned" religious ideas

The tactics they usually revert to are accusing you of being stupid for being religious and not accepting science (point number 3), claiming there can't be a God if there are people dying and suffering in the world (point number 2), and using disgraced religious figures as some kind of evidence that all religious people are somehow bad (point number 1).

The most ironic part of it is that most atheists could not tell you a thing about how evolution supposedly happened. They accept it without question and without even understanding it just because if feeds into the defiant attitude against religion that has become so "cool" to modern society.
